Cosywood UK bespoke furniture manufacturer

We work only with the highly professional and recognizable designers, workshops and manufacturers all across Europe. We combine our efforts to produce high quality products under Cosywood brand.

Our products are hand-made of hand-selected reclaimed pinewood planks and metal. We also use oak, ash and other materials upon request. The majority of our products are made in Industrial Style and tightly close to Minimalism. However, we are constantly developing our range and looking for more offbeat ideas and products. Moreover, 50% of our orders are bespoke products. Our customers are deeply involved in the designing process.

Given furniture's handmade and hand-finished nature, variations in the wood or metal work are to be expected and celebrated. Each item is unique and no two are exactly alike.

Reclaimed Wood

Solid wood is living, breathing material. It ages over time like any natural material. Natural solid wood has characteristics which include knots, variations in grain, and color differences. Seasoning and drying the wood reduces splitting and warping, but some natural movement is to be expected.  Changes in climate and weather cause solid wood furniture to move.

Natural character includes cracks within the wood, knots, mineral deposits, inclusions, as well as grain and pigment variations. Variations in height, width or depth for all pieces may vary by as much as one inch. Sometimes filler or a wood patch is required. These character marks are concealed and/or incorporated into the natural distressing of the product. They do not interfere with the structural integrity of the piece, but instead  give each piece its unique character.

All our timbers are solid reclaimed pine timbers from 100-years old houses, barns, warehouses, schools etc. Timbers are hand-selected, planed, sanded, left unfinished with the patina of reclaimed wood or stained with oil. Rescued wood may have holes from hinges or worms, nicks, nail marks and imperfections or remnants of the original hardware, which speaks of the wood's age and provenance.

Metal

We use mild or stainless steel metal in different tube sizes.

Steel can remain raw, be polished (additional cost) or painted any colour you would like. Stainless steel does not stain, corrode or rust as easily as ordinary steel. Carbon steel is sometimes referred to as “mild steel”; typically carbon steels are stiff and strong.

Handmade manufacturing process

The first stage of timber processing includes sawing logs on the slats (more simply the board) of a certain section, in accordance with the received order’s technological task. Sectional dimensions depend on the planned production of furniture products. When sawing logs maximum use is made of tangential cut, where the annual rings are placed along the board layers, – this further strengthens produced furniture board.

Then timbers are placed in a drying chamber (depending on the section, and sawn timber humidity), where drying process takes place to reach moisture content of 6-8 percent.

Then we use 4-sided planer to outposts of the board to get the required size or we leave the boards in their original patina and size.

Furthermore, our cut experts discover defects of checks, shakes, knots and at the same time predetermine length slats. These billets supplied to position the thermal splicer.

Wood is a living material, it breathes. It absorbs and releases moisture. When slats are properly positioned in the panel, these processes are not noticeable. In the event of a technology fault, items of furniture can later greatly bend or crack. Therefore, we use a shield to sort timbers in accordance with the texture of wood - the location of the annual rings on each adjacent slat should be turned in the opposite direction. This achieves a more uniform distribution of the stresses in the timber during its further operation.

Last stages are gluing the boards and sanding them. Reclaimed wood can be left unfinished with the patina of reclaimed wood or stained with oil resulting in a warm and inviting surface. Therefore, if you require different colour, we have a wide range of various finishes, please contact us for more information. Use coasters or placemats to help prevent marks or stains. Wipe the wood clean with a soft, dry cloth after each use.
